The alewife biomass has declined for three consecutive years, and the result is a noticeable decrease in the weight of chinook salmon. The mean weight of 3-year-old female chinook salmon in 2025 was 14.67 pounds, a significant drop from the long-term mean of 16.97 pounds.
This trend is reflected in the catches of anglers, with the K-D Salmon Tournament and the Salmon-A-Rama fishing tournament both showing a decline in the average size of chinook salmon. The 2025 K-D tournament had only one fish heavier than 30 pounds, and the 2025 Salmon-A-Rama tournament's heaviest fish weighed 29.58 pounds. These numbers are a stark contrast to the previous year, where the K-D tournament had 14 chinook salmon weighing over 30 pounds, and the Salmon-A-Rama tournament's winning fish weighed 32.34 pounds.
