Killer Whale: A So-So Adventure in the Deep
The deep blue sea has always been a source of fascination and fear, and it's no wonder that it has inspired countless horror and thriller films. From the classic 'Jaws' to the more recent 'Deep Blue Sea', the ocean has provided a backdrop for some truly terrifying tales. But what about the mighty killer whale? Well, it turns out that this majestic creature can be a bit of a wild card when it comes to storytelling.
In 'Killer Whale', we follow the story of Maddie, a young woman with big dreams, and her best friend Trish. They embark on a vacation to a water park, where they plan to meet a captive orca named Ceto. But things take a turn when they get drunk and decide to break into the park, only to find themselves stranded on a rock in the middle of the ocean with an angry killer whale as their only company.
Now, I know what you're thinking. A group of friends stranded on a rock with a killer whale? Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? Well, yes and no. On the one hand, it's a classic 'survival' scenario that has been done countless times before. But on the other hand, it's a refreshing change of pace to see a killer whale as the antagonist, rather than the usual suspects like sharks or great white sharks.
What makes 'Killer Whale' particularly interesting is the dynamic between the characters. Maddie and Trish are best friends, but they have their differences. Maddie is a struggling musician, while Trish is a social media influencer with a PhD in gene editing. The tension between them adds an extra layer of complexity to the story, as they navigate their relationship while trying to survive the wrath of Ceto.
However, the film does have its flaws. The limited cast means that there are only a few kills and set pieces, which can make the story feel a bit flat at times. The characters' drama has to sustain our interest between the action sequences, but it's not always successful. There are a couple of decent plot twists and reveals, but they don't quite make up for the overall lack of suspense.
In my opinion, 'Killer Whale' is a so-so adventure in the deep. It's a refreshing change of pace to see a killer whale as the antagonist, but the limited cast and lack of suspense can make it feel a bit flat at times. It's a fun ride, but it's not a landmark movie like 'Jaws' or a ridiculous but thrilling movie like 'Deep Blue Sea'. It's more of a relationship drama between two BFFs, albeit two BFFs stranded on a rock in their bikinis and hoping not to be eaten.
So, if you're a fan of survival horror and killer whales, you might enjoy 'Killer Whale'. But if you're looking for a classic thriller or a landmark movie, you might want to look elsewhere. Either way, it's a fun ride that will keep you entertained, even if it's not a masterpiece.
